The sequence leading to Bob’s death remains a masterclass in suspense. The laboratory mainframe required an override code entered directly into a terminal located in the facility's lower levels. Neither Hopper nor Dr. Owens understood the system architecture. Bob stepped up calmly, stating that he knew BASIC. Armed with a walkie-talkie and a flashlight, he ventured into the darkened service levels alone while monsters prowled the vents above.
Bob reached the terminal, entered the code, initiated the manual override, and unlocked the exterior blast doors. The escape route was open. Guided over radio by Dr. Owens, Bob evaded several roaming Demodogs, ducking into storage closets while creatures stalked past his hiding spots. He made it back to the ground floor lobby.
