Diego Rivera married Frida Kahlo in August 1929 in a civil ceremony in Coyoacán. He was forty-two; she was twenty-two. Kahlo's parents famously described the union as a "marriage between an elephant and a dove." While this relationship remains the most scrutinized artistic partnership of the twentieth century, it was biologically sterile, a source of agonizing psychological pain that Kahlo documented in paintings such as Henry Ford Hospital (1932).

Kahlo’s catastrophic 1925 bus accident had left her pelvis fractured in three places, rendering her incapable of carrying a pregnancy to term. Medical records confirm multiple therapeutic abortions and traumatic miscarriages during their time in Detroit and Mexico City.

The couple divorced in November 1939 following Rivera’s affair with Kahlo’s younger sister, Cristina Kahlo, a betrayal that severed familial trust within the Kahlo household. Yet the emotional codependency between Diego and Frida proved unbreakable. They remarried in San Francisco in December 1940 under strict stipulations: financial independence and a complete absence of sexual cohabitation. They remained legally married until Kahlo’s death at the Casa Azul in July 1954.
