Everything You Need to Know About 'It's Raining Tacos': Lyrics, Meaning, and Viral Covers
Parry Gripp did not stumble into viral fame by accident. As the lead vocalist and guitarist for 1990s pop-punk band Nerf Herder, best known for writing the theme song to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Gripp possessed deep institutional knowledge of hook construction. By the early 2010s, he turned his creative focus entirely toward hyper-short, hyper-catchy novelty tracks about food, animals, and mundane whimsy. He understood that a three-chord punk progression could easily anchor a track about lunch.
The official It's Raining Tacos release date arrived on digital storefronts and YouTube in June 2012. Shortly after, animator booneBumper produced the defining animated visualizer featuring grinning taco shells descending through stormy pink clouds into the mouths of eager cartoon characters. The animation provided the audio with an irreplaceable visual anchor. Gripp's vocal delivery was deadpan yet celebratory, marrying early internet silliness with the driving tempo of classic Southern California skate punk.
