Everything You Need to Know: When Does Luffy Use Gear 4 and How Does It Work?

Are everything You Need to Know: When Does Luffy Use Gear 4 and How Does It Work a question on your mind? Find out the complete facts in our feature story.

Gear 4 functions on a mechanical principle distinct from Luffy’s previous gears. Gear 2 manipulates blood pressure; Gear 3 pumps air into the skeletal framework. Gear 4 forces air directly into the muscular structure. Without reinforcement, this volume of air would tear human tissue apart. Luffy solves this by coating his skin and internal muscle walls in high-density Busoshoku Haki, keeping the inflated rubber under tremendous tension.

This internal pressure turns Luffy's body into a pneumatic weapon. He retracts his fists and feet into his limbs like coiled artillery springs before firing them outward with kinetic force several times greater than normal rubber recoil. By constantly kicking the air off the rebound of his own compressed soles, he gains true aerial propulsion, flying across battlefields at will.

This performance comes at an exorbitant energetic cost. Gear 4 consumes Luffy's Haki reserves at an unsustainable rate. Once the transformation crosses its temporal limit, typically lasting 15 to 20 minutes under sustained output, the form deflates instantly. Luffy then experiences a 10-minute window of total Haki exhaustion. During this cooldown, he cannot project Armament, observation, or conqueror defenses, leaving him physically mobile but defenseless against elite opponents.
