On the morning of June 28, 1997, 88-year-old Raymond Howard and his 83-year-old wife, Lela, walked out of their house in Salado, Texas. Raymond had recently undergone brain surgery for an aneurysm and struggled with cognitive lapses. Lela lived with advanced Alzheimer's disease. The plan was modest: drive roughly 15 miles north along Interstate 35 to the nearby town of Temple to attend the annual Pioneer Day festival.

They never made it to the festival gates. Instead of taking the local exit, Raymond stayed on the highway. Over the next five days, their 1983 Oldsmobile Delta 88 carried them across county lines and into neighboring states. Law enforcement fielded sightings hundreds of miles off course, including an encounter with a police officer near Dallas who stopped the car for a broken headlight, had no missing-person report on file, and simply pointed them south toward home.

Two weeks later, search crews discovered the couple's vehicle at the bottom of a 25-foot ravine near Arkadelphia, Arkansas, more than 400 miles from Salado. Both had died inside the car. The tragic end of the search made national headlines, casting a heavy pall over the Central Texas communities that had mobilized volunteer search parties to find them.
