Purging search logs manually provides temporary relief, but it requires continuous maintenance. A more effective defense lies in configuring Google's automated lifecycle rules. Once set, server-side cron jobs sweep the archives and permanently delete search records that cross your designated expiration threshold.

To enable this, head to the Data and Privacy dashboard inside your account. Under "History settings," click "Web & App Activity." Look for the Auto-delete control. Alphabet presents three choices: 3 months, 18 months, or 36 months. Opting for the 3-month window provides the most aggressive privacy posture without disabling personalization completely.

If you prefer an absolute zero-retention environment, you can toggle Web & App Activity to "Off" or choose "Pause." Pausing prevents Google from indexing future search activity to your authenticated account. Be aware that pausing Web & App Activity degrades recommendation quality across Google Maps, Google Discover, and smart home speakers, as those tools depend on contextual past behavior.
