Kumba Retiring After 33 Year's: Inside Busch Gardens' Replacement Plan
Park queues surged within hours of the announcement. Enthusiasts and casual visitors scrambled to secure a final lap on the ride that put the Tampa park on the international coaster map. Operating until August 2, 2026 gives fans a three-week window to experience Kumba's signature 108-foot vertical loop wrapping around the lift hill, an element that became a staple of early 1990s marketing campaigns.
Kumba was the park’s oldest active roller coaster following the removal of Python in 2006 and the hybrid conversion of Gwazi into Iron Gwazi in 2022. It operated without sand filling its hollow steel box track, creating an acoustic signature audible from nearly every corner of the park. That deafening rumble became part of the park's auditory fabric. Ride operators reported record single-day wait times exceeding 90 minutes immediately following the retirement bulletin, a sharp departure from the walk-on boarding times typical of Kumba’s weekday mornings earlier this spring.
