Muggsy Bogues Dunking Faq: Vertical Jump, in-Game Stats, and Under-6-Foot Legends
Q1: Did Muggsy Bogues ever dunk in an official NBA game?
A1: No. Muggsy Bogues never recorded an official dunk in any regular-season or playoff NBA game across his 14 seasons.
Q2: What was Muggsy Bogues' official vertical jump?
A2: While popular culture claims Bogues jumped 44 inches, reliable athletic evaluations from his collegiate and early professional career estimate his peak vertical leap between 38 and 40 inches.
Q3: Why couldn't Bogues dunk easily despite his vertical leap?
A3: Hand size was the primary limiting factor. Because Bogues had small hands, he could not palm a standard 29.5-inch NBA basketball. To dunk, he needed enough clearance to control the ball with fingertips or two hands, requiring an unrealistic 45-plus inches of vertical rise.
Q4: Who is the shortest player to ever dunk in an NBA game?
A4: Spud Webb, at 5 feet 6 inches, is universally recognized as the shortest player to dunk regularly in NBA games and the shortest champion in Slam Dunk Contest history.
