Smiling Friends Season Finale Breakdown: Allan’s Date and Mr. Boss’s Dragon Hunt
Allan Red Guy was originally designed as background friction. When Smiling Friends debuted its pilot in 2020, Allan served as the passive-aggressive foil to Pim Pimling's manic optimism and Charlie Dompler's casual cynicism. He spent his early appearances hanging from ceilings, demanding paperclips, or hyper-focusing on stolen dairy products.
His breakout standalone adventure, a frantic, dirty odyssey across city streets just to recover a box of imported cheese, proved to Adult Swim executives that the character possessed legitimate gravitational pull. Voiced by co-creator Michael Cusack using a low-register nasal monotone, Allan talks with clipped, pragmatic cadence. Cusack relies on brief, deadpan phrases that stand in stark contrast to the frenetic hyperventilating of Pim. Giving Allan a complete narrative arc in the 2026 finale completed his transition from recurring visual gag to indispensable lead.
