The Hidden Royal Wedding: Did Buddha Marry Before His Renunciation?
Roughly six years after departing, Shakyamuni Buddha returned to Kapilavastu as an enlightened teacher. The entire Shakya court assembled to welcome him, but Yasodhara remained absent. She stayed in her private chambers, stating that if she possessed genuine virtue, her husband would come to see her himself.
The historical accounts documented in Sri Lankan scholarship, commemorated annually on Medin Poya Day (the full moon day of March), record that the Buddha walked straight to Yasodhara’s chambers, accompanied by his chief disciples Sariputta and Moggalana. He explicitly instructed his disciples not to intervene if she expressed grief.
Upon seeing him in monastic robes, Yasodhara collapsed to the floor, grasped his ankles, and wept openly. King Suddhodana informed the Buddha that during his six years of wandering, Yasodhara had matched his austerities stroke for stroke from within the palace walls.
The Buddha acknowledged her extraordinary devotion, stating that her spiritual discipline had shielded the royal lineage during his absence. Soon after, their seven-year-old son, Rahula, was ordained as the monastic order's first novice, relinquishing his claim to the Shakya throne in favor of the spiritual path.
