A frequent point of confusion among competitive players and Nuzlocke runners concerns Effort Value (EV) distribution. In Generation III, the Exp Share does not divide EVs down the middle like it does base experience points.

Instead, every Pokémon that receives experience points from a defeated opponent receives 100% of that opponent's EV yield. If an active Arcanine defeats an enemy Machoke yielding 2 Attack EVs, the Arcanine receives 2 Attack EVs. If a passive Dratini in your party holds the Exp Share, that Dratini also receives the full 2 Attack EVs.

This mechanic presents a distinct advantage for early stat training, but it requires caution during specialized character builds. Leaving the Exp Share equipped on a prospective Special Sweeper while battling physical gym trainers will inadvertently pad unwanted physical Attack or Defense EVs into its stat allocation.
