The origin story of the colorful sphere is rooted in practical frustration rather than corporate focus groups. In 2009, high school teacher Merrilee Kick was grading student papers by her backyard pool in Plano, Texas. She wanted an alcoholic drink to sip, but bringing glass poolside carried the risk of shattered shards on the concrete. When she poured vodka into a plastic cup, it tipped over easily. Around the same time, Kick was working on her master's degree thesis in business administration. She decided to build her graduate project around an unbreakable, spill-resistant, single-serve cocktail package.

The spherical plastic container design drew inspiration from a small glass snowball paperweight Kick purchased during a trip to Sweden. She realized a round, low-center-of-gravity shape would prevent drinks from tipping over on uneven outdoor surfaces. Engineering the container proved difficult. US manufacturers told her that blow-molding a spherical plastic body capable of accepting a traditional aluminum beverage pull-tab was technically impossible. Refusing to scrap the concept, Kick sourced custom equipment, mortgaged her home, took out an SBA loan, and began blending liquids inside an empty industrial warehouse.

Kick launched the brand under Southern Champion, an umbrella company she founded alongside her family. What started as a hand-delivered regional product gained swift traction among college students, tailgaters, and outdoor eventgoers. By the time spirits giant Sazerac acquired BuzzBallz in 2024, the family-built enterprise had expanded across all 50 US states and international markets, securing its spot as a staple of modern convenience retail.
